It’s Never Too Late to Clean Up Mold!
Common Indoor Mold:
Cladosporium, Penicillium, Alternaria & Aspergillus
Here in the middle Morgantown area, we have the ideal climate for mold to develop and thrive. Since mold can start to develop in as little as 48 hours after water damage, it is imperative that any damage due to a fire, flood, broken water pipe, or leaky foundation be cleaned up promptly and properly. This cleanup will help you avoid significant property damage to your Morgantown home due to mold.
After Spring storms and summer showers, comes the damp, and moisture forecast, and the result of mold infestation is high. It is important to address any signs of mold immediately and correctly. Homes in our area are often affected by mold in bathrooms and basements, mold can develop anywhere in your home, especially if you have experienced any type of flooding.
Mold spores spread through the air, so even areas that were not directly affected by floodwaters can soon become home to serious mold infestations. Mold is often found in air ducts, which can cause it to spread quickly.
SERVPRO of Morgantown is always ready to help you restore your home after a water damage or in the event of mold.
Time is of the essence: the longer you postpone cleanup, the longer the mold remediation process, the more expensive, and more inconvenience for you and your family. If you are starting to see or smell mold in your home, a thorough cleaning and disinfecting is required, and the sooner the better. Mold has the potential to cause health effects, so cleanup should be conducted with proper protective clothing, masks and gloves. Bleach and water should be used to kill the mold in all affected areas. Scrub the solution into the area, rinse, and dry thoroughly.
If saturated drywall and insulation was not removed after storm damage, you likely need a thorough evaluation by a professional emergency water damage restoration team. Water damage that was not properly remedied prior to rebuilding may have caused mold to start growing behind your new walls or under your new carpeting.
If the structure of your home was not properly disinfected, dehumidified, and dried, mold may be thriving. Your local SERVPRO of Morgantown team see this frequently. In a rush to make properties habitable, steps are often skipped, leading to mold infestations. If you believe you have mold growth from recent floods or other water damage, call us immediately. We can quickly help you identify problem areas and start the mold remediation process.
Our mission is to help our neighbors, friends, and community members quickly recover from damage caused by natural disaster, fire, sewage backup, or other events. Regardless of the size or type of damage, we can quickly respond and start the evaluation and investigation into the cause, as well as the best way to restore your property to its original state. What To Do If Your Basement Floods
8/2/2024 (Permalink)
If your basement has flooded in Morgantown, you may be at a loss regarding what you should do. No one wants to deal with a basement flood, but facing reality and following these four steps will help you to recover your property with as little residual damage as possible.
1. Call Your Insurance Agent You may have insurance coverage for floods in your home. Because of this, you should always check over your homeowners policy and call the agent who handles your account to ask questions and make a claim if you can do so.
2. Wait for Conditions to Settle Before you decide how to handle water removal, you will need to make sure that the water is under control. If it seems to be limited to the basement, and any outdoor water has receded, you can safely move on to draining your basement flood.
3. Choose Your Removal Method All water removal methods are typically handled best by water damage technicians. Two typical solutions are pumping for large floods and vacuuming with a wet/dry machine for smaller ones. It is a good idea to research all of your options so that you make the best decision possible.
4. Decide on a Drying Method Most homeowners will find that the majority of their damaged property and valuables will need to be dried, dehumidified or otherwise salvaged, as old flood water can cause irreversible damage to your investments if left to sit. The service that you hired for water removal can likely help you with drying and restoration, as well.
A basement flood is a big deal to any concerned homeowner, but being prepared can help you be less overwhelmed if this unfortunate situation is occurring or should occur in the future. Use your newfound knowledge to help protect your Morgantown, WV house from as much lasting damage as possible.

We Have The Professional Equipment
4/5/2024 (Permalink)
It’s the water you don’t see! Even small water damages have the potential to cause serious structural and indoor air quality issues over time. The key to avoiding costly future restoration is to handle every water problem as a real threat to your property.
SERVPRO® of Morgantown professionals have the equipment, training, and experience to find and dry unseen water before secondary damages occur. The proper equipment makes a measurable difference in reducing the damage expense during a fire or water loss. When time matters, technology and equipment must be counted on to perform.
SERVPRO® of Morgantown professionals will answer your call with fast action and a full arsenal of drying equipment. Here are a few of the tools used by our SERVPRO® professionals.
Moisture Sensors- Used to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards and walls.
Moisture Meters- Used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials. The moisture tester provides accurate readings, allowing us to monitor the drying process.
Thermohygrometers- Measure temperature and relative humidity.
When armed with this information, we here at SERVPRO® of Morgantown can calculate and create an environment most conducive to drying. When facing a contaminated water loss, it is not only important to dry the structure, but the structure must also be disinfected and often deodorized.
Ultra Low-Volume (ULV) Foggers- Atomize liquid deodorizing agents, producing a fine mist that can easily penetrate the site where odor-causing residues may accumulate. This device can also be used to inject fungicides and disinfectants into wall cavities and other hard-to-reach areas.
Thermal Foggers- Dispense solvent-based products by creating a dense fog. The fog consists of tiny particles of deodorant solutions that attach to and neutralize odor-causing particles to deodorize structures, garments, automobiles and other places where cleaning cannot reach.
The bottom line? SERVPRO® of Morgantown professionals have the training and equipment to make it “Like it never even happened.”

4 Reasons a Drain Cleaner Might Not Be the Best Solution

4 Reasons a Drain Cleaner Might Not Be the Best Solution
4 Reasons a Drain Cleaner Might Not Be the Best Solution
Plumbing problems can range from a horrendous sewage backup to a simple clogged drain. The former will likely require the services of a professional disaster response franchise, while the latter might be something you can tackle on your own. There are many ways to get a drain working again, some better than others. Though reaching right away for a drain cleaner seems like a good idea, a closer look suggests pouring chemicals into your pipes should be approached with caution. These reasons clarify the dangers of resorting to chemicals.
1. Chemicals Are Harmful to People.
- Drain cleaners are toxic to humans and to pets. Merely breathing in the chemicals can cause stinging in the eyes and discomfort in the mouth. The chemicals can also burn exposed skin.
2. They Are Dangerous to the Environment.
- Chemicals that go down the drain in your home or business wind up in lakes, streams, and groundwater. These chemicals are toxic enough to kill fish, reptiles, amphibians, and insects. There are less harmful ways to clear a clogged drain, including mechanical and biological options.
3. They Are Tough on Pipes.
- Chemical drain cleaners work by creating enough heat to burn through substances causing the blockage. Whether the source of the heat is lye, bleach, acid, or some other substance, the chemicals can harm older, weaker pipes and plastic pipes.
4. Chemicals Don't Always Work.
- In situations where the drain is completely blocked, chemicals often just sit in the pipes creating heat and not clearing the drain. Oil and grease buildup in the drain is another occasion not conducive to being cleaned with chemicals.
Whether your home or business has a clogged drain or a major sewage problem, SERVPRO professionals are Faster to Any Size Disaster and are trained to remediate water damage. They are experienced in sewage cleaning methods that restore a building to excellent condition again. The franchise has been helping people recover from fires, floods, and other disasters for over 50 years.

Myths About Mold
2/11/2022 (Permalink)
Myth #1: Your house and business can and should be totally free of mold.
- Truth: Microscopic spores are all around us, both indoors and outdoors. Tiny, invisible to the naked eye mold spores enter our homes and businesses through open doors and windows, heating and air conditioning systems, and can even be carried in by our pets. If you were to have an indoor air quality professional or an industrial hygienist conduct a mold test in your home or business, then you would learn every indoor space has an acceptable or natural mold spore count. The problem arrives when you have an elevated mold spore count or see visible mold growing on materials inside your property. In those cases, you should contact us immediately for mold remediation services.
Myth #2: Black mold is toxic.
- Truth: Thousands of different mold species have been scientifically identified in the United States. Some molds appearing to be black are actually a dark green color. The most commonly known dark green mold species associated with health concerns is Stachybotrys chartarum. However, not all dark green or black colored molds are Stachybotrys. Regardless of which specific species of mold you may have in your home or business, you should have it removed. Also, despite the particular species, all microbial growths should be remediated using the same method: position containment around the affected area, stabilize the environment, removed affected porous materials, clean and disinfect remaining nonporous materials, and "scrub" the contaminated room with a HEPA air scrubber. Please note, the source of the issue must first be identified and resolved.
Myth #3: Bleach kills mold.
- Truth: Bleach does not kill microbial growth. Bleach will discolor the mold spores for a short period, but the mold will continue on growing. Eventually, you will notice colored microbial growth again. Also, as previously stated, microbial growth is caused by a moisture problem and the original source must be corrected. Applying bleach to the affected material will only amplify the moisture problem.
Myth #4: You can remediate mold yourself.
- Truth: While you may be very capable of removing affected materials, like drywall and carpet yourself, without the necessary professional equipment and expertise you risk spreading the microscopic mold spores throughout more rooms in the property. Remember, the first few steps in our mold remediation process are to set up containment around the affected area and to stabilize the environment. Our protocol works to prevent the spreading of microscopic spores by protecting the unaffected areas. By utilizing negative airflow and air scrubbers with HEPA filters, our mold remediation technicians can not only remove microbial growth but also protect the rest of your home or business. Our mold remediation technicians are trained and certified to properly remove microbial growth. Trust our professionals.

Hoarding
1/6/2022 (Permalink)
Hoarding
Hoarding--it was a term which began with folks known to have their savings by them, probably hidden inside their flock-beds; in the contemporary day, hoarding in a living or work space is a pattern characterized by excessive acquisition of and/or an inability or unwillingness to discard large quantities of objects that cover the living areas of the home, or an office area. You may have made a commitment to clear out and clean out.
It takes time.
Some conditions that may be present in a hoarding situation:
- Beds that cannot be slept in;
- Kitchens that cannot be used for food preparation; Tables, chairs, or sofas that cannot be used for dining or sitting;
- Unsanitary bathrooms; Tubs, showers, and sinks filled with items and can no longer be used for washing or bathing;
- Their clutter and mess is at a point where it can cause illness, distress, and impairment.
- Also, if pets are present, they may have caused significant damage to floors and carpeting because they have been having accidents inside.
We do rebuild--We are also capable of laying flooring, carpeting and much, much more. We are here to help.

1/3/2022 (Permalink)

- more than 1/3 (38%) of home fire deaths result from fires in which no smoke alarms are present.
- 3 out of 5 home fire deaths result from fires in properties without working smoke alarms.
- The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms.
- Half of home fire deaths happen between 11pm and 7am when most people are asleep.
- Home fire death rates in homes with working smoke alarms have decreased by 51%

The American Red Cross goes door to door to install working smoke alarms in homes that do not have them and practice fire drills with families so they will know what to do incase of a fire. Members of SERVPRO of Morgantown and American Red Cross, can offer to install smoke detectors and help residents develop a home fire escape plan.

Furnace Maintenance
1/3/2022 (Permalink)
Furnace Maintenance tips to keep you warm this winter.
1. Give your unit a once-over The first thing you need to do when maintaining your furnace is a spot-check of the entire system. Visually check your furnace for any signs of damage—warning signs generally include combustion residue or soot around the unit, cracks in your ducts, and debris around the flue and/or vents. Make sure the pilot light is on and that the flame is a steady blue, not flickering yellow or orange. Finally, don’t forget to inspect exterior vents and the portions of your HVAC Systems that are kept outside since any debris or buildup of leaves, snow, and ice can wreak havoc on your system over the winter and make your unit unusable in the spring and summer months.
2. Cleaning out your vents Although it may seem obvious, cleaning the heating vents around your home is one of the most important regular furnace maintenance jobs you can do and requires little to no specialist knowledge. In order to keep your furnace running efficiently throughout the winter, make sure to vacuum your floor vents and remove dust and debris from all of your vents throughout the house. In addition to helping your furnace work better, this basic cleaning task will drastically improve the air quality in your home (a dirty furnace vent will just blow dust and other particles around your home whenever the heating comes on).
3. Inspect furnace filters If you don’t mind doing some DIY furnace maintenance, you can inspect and clean the filters inside your furnace on your own. However, before you open your furnace unit, make sure it is completely cooled and switched off. Disposable filters—usually made from fiberglass or pleated fabric paper—should be changed around every three months, while permanent filters should be washed and cleaned regularly during the heating season as best practice.
4. Protect your home After you’ve successfully inspected, cleaned, and repaired your furnace, you can further ensure that your home is safe by installing a carbon monoxide detector near your HVAC unit. In addition to a smoke or heat detector, a carbon monoxide detector is essential for any homes that are heated with gas (remember that this also applies to fireplaces.) Simply place the detector near your furnace (see instructions for specific placement distances) and turn it on, making sure to test it regularly.
Now that you’ve taken all necessary winter prep precautions, you can enjoy a cup of hot chocolate in front of the fireplace!

Summer is almost here! With that it will be time to open the pools, uncover the grille, and get the fire pits ready for roasting marshmallows. When you are getting ready for your family and friends' get togethers, there are things you need to do or watch for to protect you and your loved ones. When grilling, make sure you have your grille away from any type of structure. A grille can melt siding on a home or garage or even catch it on fire. The same goes for a fire pit. You should always keep an eye on your fire pit. Winds can carry hot ashes, which can cause a fire as well. And before you retire for the night make sure all fires are out and grille is off. Have a safe and fun summer!

Legend has it that the distinctive green colored SERVPRO vehicle can be spotted from a mile away. I don't know if the old legend is true, but I know that sometimes when I'm driving through town, people will recognize me by the car. The good news however, is that a brand new SERVPRO cruiser will be driving through the Morgantown area very soon!
This is very big news for the company, as it make it to where the marketing team doesn't have to stretch as thin and that means the business in the different areas will be more concentrated and focused. What SERVPRO can do for you
1/3/2020 (Permalink)
SERVPRO is a franchise company with over 45 years of leadership in cleanup and restoration, but do people really understand what all SERVPRO can do and the various services that we offer? People hear cleaning and restoration and immediately think that all we do is carpet and upholstery cleaning and maybe some fire and water restoration, however, SERVPRO does much more than just this.
For starters, our main work we get is mostly fire and water restoration but from that water comes mold mitigation, which we actually do as well as. Another service we offer that connects with water and fire restoration is reconstruction, however, we still offer the service even if there's no water or fire damage. We also do bio hazard, vandalism and crime scene cleanups in some of our more rare cases. SERVPRO offers content claims and inventory services for when the whole house is a wreck and you don't want your belongings soiled. We also offer air duct and HVAC cleaning, which has to be regularly kept up on in order to maintain quality air in your home and your lungs. Lastly, we offer an array of carpet and hard floor cleaning, along with odor identification and elimination, and stain removal. We also clean upholstery and drapes with dry or wet methods to assure a thorough clean the first time.

Different Types of Smoke Damage
9/5/2018 (Permalink)
There are two different types of smoke - wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Morgantown WV will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke - Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke - Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue - Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire.
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
